Facts about Alexandria
Found in the Rapides Parish, Alexandria serves as the parish seat. The city is found along the south bank of the Red River, and is considered to be in the geographic center of the state. As of 2021, the city had a population of more than 44,700 residents. It's also the principal city in what's called the Alexandria Metropolitan Area.
The town of Alexandra was incorporated in 1818, and served primarily as an agricultural center, and a port city that was near, but not on, the Gulf Coast. In 1832, the town was incorporated as a city. The population consistently increased through the rest of the century, tapered off during the Great Depression, and began to grow again at the time of World War II.
While not directly on the Gulf, Alexandria has sustained damage from hurricanes. Hurricane Rita in 2005 caused severe damage to roofs, as well as triggering flooding and power outages. Hurricane Gustav in 2008 downed a number of trees, led to power outages, and flooded a number of areas in the city.
Alexandria is home to a varied economy based on education, healthcare, and retail. Port activity continues to be a major economic driver.
