Facts about Gonzales
Located in Ascension Parish, Gonzales is a city that;s home to more than 12,200 people. Sometimes referred to as the Jambalaya Capital of the World, the city has held an annual Jambalaya Festival since 1968, organized under the auspices of the Jambalaya Festival Association.
While the history of the area dates back to the latter 18th century, it would be the middle of the 19th century before any significant settlement developed. Even then, the settlement remained somewhat small. It was not until 1887 the Gonzales post office was established.
Growth began in earnest with the construction of a rail line by the Louisiana Railway and Navigation Company. Subsequently, the L&N attempted to have the name of the settlement changed, but the populace resisted. This led to an appeal to the state legislature, and the passing of legislation requiring rail lines to adopt names for stops that were the same as the local post office.
Official incorporation as a village took place in 1922. This was followed by incorporation as a town in 1952. More recently, the town was chartered as a city in 1977.
