Facts about Gulfport
Located roughly 55 miles from New Orleans, Gulfport is a city found along the US Gulf Coast. The 2020 census states that the city is home to more than 72,900 residents, with more than 416,000 residents being in the Gulfport-Biloxi Statistical Area. Gulfport is also the site of the US Navy Atlantic Fleet Seabees.[6]
The city was officially incorporated in 1898. The founding was due to the efforts of William H. Hardy. The intent was to create a population center along the route that connected the inland lumber yards to the coast, and ultimately to make shipping lumber more cost-effective.
Like other cities along the Gulf Coast, Gulfport has experienced multiple strikes by hurricanes. One of the worst took place in 1969, when Hurricane Camille hit the city with 175 mph winds. Hurricane Katrina rammed into Gulfport with sustained winds of 120 mph in 2005. A number of industries provide employment opportunities for local residents.
