Facts about Shreveport
Shreveport is a city that's primarily found in Caddo Parish, and also serves as the seat for that parish. As of the 2020 census, the city proper has a population of more than 187,000 residents. It's also part of the Shreveport–Bossier City Metropolitan Area, which has a combined population of more than 397,000 people.
The city was founded by the Shreve Town Company in 1836. At the time, the expressed purpose for the Company was to establish and develop a town that would serve as a key point along the Red River and the Texas Trail. The effort was successful, and Shreveport experienced consistent growth for the rest of the century.
The discovery of oil in Louisiana in the early years of the 20th century made Shreveport a major hub for the oil industry. That continued for decades, until the supply of oil began to wane. By the 1980s, many corporations had left the area, resulting in the loss of a number of jobs.
A number of colleges and universities are found in Shreveport and the surrounding area. In addition, there are corporations that either have headquarters in the city, or that maintain distribution centers or regional offices. Those include companies like Regions Financial Corporation, United Parcel Service, General Electric, and APS Payroll.
